Our story about the trailer stolen from the Giving Garden sparked a call from Ron Melancon of stolentrailers.com in Virginia.

He tells us that utility trailers are frequently stolen:

many times unreported to police, and when reported, often unsolved.

Trailers may be dismantled, rebuilt and registered as new home made trailers.

Many states do not even require licensing.

Melancon has campaigned with Congress to get unified serial numbers for trailers so they may be identified by frame. He also wants tougher enforcement of trailer theft and punishment for thieves.

Melancon also notes the danger of dragging chains, blaming them for many roadside fires that pop up mysteriously.
