Fatal trailer detachment accidents raise concern for trailer safety

BOZEMAN -
After last week’s fatal car accident involving a detached trailer, correctly installing a trailer is crucial.
“I don't think they pose a threat as long as they're properly equipped and all of that equipment is working correctly,” said Montana Highway Patrol Sergeant Patrick McCarthy.
Accidents involving detached trailers can be deadly. Try and avoid any freely moving trailers as they can move quickly and erratically.
Create the maximum distance between you and that loose trailer,” McCarthy said.
With a large amount of trailers on the road due to the summer season and construction in the area, it is important to attach them safely.
“The first thing to do is get the trailer on the ball, tighten the ball clamp down, just make sure that it's secure, out of everything that you do with a trailer, that's the most important part is making sure that the ball does not come detached from the truck," explained Bozeman U-Haul General Manager Jesse Dingman.
"Next is the safety chains and the lights. I like to do the lights first. If you have problems with the lighting you can always take the trailer off, you’re not doing all that work again with taking the chains off. Plug it in, turn your headlights and flashers on, walk the vehicle and check all the lights. You should always cross the safety chains to the opposite side of the hitch. So, the left chain goes to the right side. Make sure all the chains are attached and secured. Try to keep the chains 4 to 6 inches off the ground. That avoids the chains dragging on the ground. That's about the size of it."
One thing drivers need to be sure that they're doing when they're towing is to check the tire pressure every time they stop.
