A trailer carrying a lawn mower became loose on U.S. 13 Tuesday, crossed the median, and crashed into a car, whose 21-year-old driver was thrown from the vehicle.
A truck was pulling the trailer heading north into Harrington near Tower Hill Road, when the trailer detached, said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe of Delaware State Police.
The newly-separated trailer with a lawn mower steered into the grassy median and crossed it onto oncoming southbound lanes. The trailer hit a car head-on and the 21-year-old driver was thrown from the car.
While airborne, he hit an SUV in the right lane.
The impact also threw the lawn mower into the air, Jaffe said. It landed in the right lane and slipped off to the shoulder.
The truck's driver, a 68-year-old Harrington man was not injured, and the 70-year-old Florida woman driving the SUV was taken to the hospital, where she was treated and released.
The 21-year-old was not wearing a seat belt, Jaffe said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
U.S. 13 was closed for seven and a half hours while police investigated and cleared the highway.
Three months ago on Del. 1, a work truck crossed the median, struck a car, and then a minivan, killing five family members and seriously injuring the sixth.
