ACCIDENT KILLS WOMAN, DAUGHTER
Author: Dan Shriner JOURNAL STAFF WRITER
Dateline: MT. MORRIS TWP.
Article Text:
A Laurelville, Ohio, woman and her 4-year-old daughter were killed and
two other children injured when a runaway dual-axle utility trailer
struck their vehicle Sunday afternoon on I-75.
Mt. Morris Township Sgt. Jim Tomalia said the woman, 32, whose identity
was not yet released, was thrown from her vehicle and died instantly. A
4-year-old girl was taken to Hurley Medical Center and died late Sunday.
The girl's 4-year-old twin sister suffered minor injuries and a 6-year-old brother is in serious condition at Hurley.
The accident tied up southbound traffic on I-75 for almost five hours,
leading to backups about 40 miles to Bay City, during one of the
busiest travel days of the year.
Tomalia said Ohio woman's Ford Explorer was just south of Carpenter
Road about 2 p.m. when her vehicle was struck by the trailer, which
came off of a northbound pickup.
A Sterling Heights man was driving the pickup.
After the trailer came loose, it crossed the median and struck the woman's vehicle, slicing it open on the driver's side.
The force of the crash sheared off both driver's-side doors on the
Explorer. Tomalia said the crash also cut the woman's seat belt and she
was thrown from the vehicle. The 4-year-old also was thrown from the
vehicle.
The woman's sister, who was riding in another car and witnessed the
accident, suffered minor injuries when the same trailer struck her car.
Tomalia said the accident is under investigation, but authorities are concentrating on the trailer hitch and safety chains.
"It's pretty clear the hitch and chains were not adequate," Tomalia said.
He said it would be decided later whether to pursue charges against the pickup's driver.
The freeway was shut down for about five hours and southbound traffic
was backed up nearly to Bay City. Some traffic was routed onto I-475 or
onto other roads, such as Linden Road, and up to Pierson Road, where
cars could re-enter the freeway.
The freeway was shut between Mt. Morris Road and Pierson Road while
police, which included state police accident reconstruction experts,
investigated the accident.
It was reopened about 7 p.m.
